    Phenylethylmethylhydantoin Farmacologia

    Mephenytoin è un farmaco antiepilettico, che può essere utile nel trattamento dell'epilessia. Il sito primario di azione sembra essere la corteccia motoria in cui è inibita la diffusione di attività convulsiva. Forse attraverso la promozione di sodio efflusso da i neuroni, mephenytoin tende a stabilizzare la soglia contro ipereccitabilità causata da eccessiva stimolazione o cambiamenti ambientali in grado di ridurre di sodio della membrana gradiente. Questo include la riduzione di potenziamento posttetanic alle sinapsi. Perdita di potenziamento posttetanic impedisce corticale sequestro di fuochi detonante adiacenti aree corticali. Mephenytoin riduce la massima attività dei centri tronco cerebrale responsabile per la fase di tonico tonico-cloniche (grande male) convulsioni.
