EMERGENCY OVERVIEW

Appearance: white to light cream crystalline powder.
Caution! Stench. May cause allergic skin reaction. This substance has caused adverse reproductive and fetal effects in humans. May cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritation. May be harmful if swallowed. Light sensitive. This product contains 2-Mercapto-1-methylimidazole, a chemical known to the state of California to cause developmental effects.
Target Organs: Blood, thyroid.

Potential Health Effects
Eye: May cause eye irritation.
Skin: May cause skin irritation. May cause an allergic reaction in certain individuals. Rashes may follow high doses of methimazole.
Ingestion: In high doses may cause gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting, fever, skin rashes, and blood abnormalities including anemia. May be harmful if swallowed. May cause pain and stiffness in joints, paresthesias, headache, and loss or depigmentation of hair.
Inhalation: Causes irritation of the mucous membrane and upper respiratory tract. May cause sore throat, headache, and other effects similar to those of ingestion.
Chronic: Chronic exposure may cause reproductive disorders and teratogenic effects. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. Chronic exposure can affect thyroid function. Chronic exposure may cause blood effects. Chronic exposure may cause blood effects, like agranulocytosis, a symptom complex characterized by marked decrease in number of granulocytes and by lesions of throat and other mucous membranes of GI tract and of the skin.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme diately.
Skin: Get medical aid immediately. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid.
Notes to Physician: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion.
Extinguishing Media: In case of fire, use water, dry chemical, chemical foam, or alcohol-resistant foam.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks: Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. Wash area with soap and water. Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide ventilation.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage

Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Do not ingest or inhale.
Storage: Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Hormones and antibiotics room. Store protected from light.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls: Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
