CLA Indication

For use with Amoxicillin, clavulanic acid is suitable for the treatment of infections with Staph. aureus and Bacteroides fragilis, or with beta-lactamase producing H. influenzae and E. coli.

CLA Pharmacology

Clavulanic acid, produced by the fermentation of Streptomyces Clavuligerus, is a beta-lactam structurally related to the penicillins. Clavulanic acid is used in conjunction with amoxicillin for the treatment of bronchitis and urinary tract, skin, and soft tissue infections caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms.

CLA side effects and Toxicity

Gastrointestinal symptoms including stomach and abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Rash, hyperactivity, or drowsiness have also been observed in a small number of patients

CLA Patient Information

Patients should be counselled that antibacterial drugs, including AUGMENTIN XR,
should only be used to treat bacterial infections. They do not treat viral
infections (e.g., the common cold). When AUGMENTIN XR is prescribed to treat a
bacterial infection, patients should be told that although it is common to feel
better early in the course of therapy, the medication should be taken exactly
as directed. Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may decrease
the effectiveness of the immediate treatment, and (2) increase the likelihood that
bacteria will develop resistance and will not be treatable by AUGMENTIN XR or other
antibacterial drugs in the future. Discard any unused medicine.

CLA Organisms Affected

Enteric bacteria and other eubacteria
